“Its not everyday you die. Its only one day. One day in a long procession of days. The day you are born. The day you marry. The day you die.”

In 1960 David Golike is only twenty-five when he leaves his family farm and the United States for the bright lights and culture of Paris. Being an ex-pat with the added oddity of having only one arm, David spends a lonely ten years in Paris before he meets Catherine, a talented art authenticator and Russian immigrant.

Thus begins a decade long affair that takes the lovers from Cannes to Normandy and Rome. Even in his elation at finding love and acceptance, what David wants most is to escape the stifling pull of his Baptist family and their notions of sin.

But in 1980, David returns to the farm in Illinois unannounced and alone. For two decades David has kept his life secret from his family and when he dies eight years later, alone and a hundreds of miles away, he takes his secrets with him to the grave. All that is left behind is an unaddressed letter and rumors of who or what David left behind in Paris.

Captivating in its showcase of a family’s black sheep, Lives Paris Took is a multigenerational story of love and mistakes and the lengths we will all got to to learn the truth.
